May/June 2016 WASSCE: Candidates record 53% pass

 

Results of 137, 295 candidates withheld 
For the first time in the last five years, candidates who sat for the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) May/June 2016 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) recorded mass pass as
 878, 040 (52.97per cent) obtained five credits including English and Mathematics.
Announcing the release of the school examination results at the Yaba WAEC headquarters along side his management team, the Head of National Office (HNO), Mr. Olu Adenipekun, said state sponsored candidates would not be able to access their results because of their state governments have not paid for the exam fees.
He also disclosed that 133 visually challenged candidates sat for the school exam out which 23 (17.29 per cent) of them recorded five credits including English Language and Mathematics.
According to him, 1,552,758 candidates registered for the exam, out of which 1,544,234 candidates, consisting of 825,650 male representing 53.5 per cent and 718,585 female representing 46.5 per cent candidates sat the examination.
He added: ‘‘Out of the total number of candidates who sat the examination, 1,393,907 candidates, representing 90.26 per cent had their results fully released, while 158,718 candidates, representing 9.74 per cent had a few of their subjects still being processed due to some errors mainly traceable to the candidates and schools in the course of registration or writing the examination.
“Such errors are being corrected by the Council to enable the affected candidates get their results fully processed and released subsequently.’’
Giving a breakdown of candidates’ performance in the school exam, Mr. Adenipekun said 1,438,679 candidates, representing 93.16 per cent obtained credits and above in two subjects, 1,370,049 candidates, representing 88.72 per cent obtained credits and above in three subjects.
The WAEC boss disclosed that 1,282,204 candidates, representing 83.03 per cent obtained credits and above in four subjects while 1,167,484 candidates, representing 75.6 percent obtained credits and above in five subjects.
Adenipekun further stated that 1,014,573 candidates, representing 65.70 per cent obtained credits and above in six subjects and 878,040 candidates, representing 52.97 per cent obtained credits in five subjects and above, including English Language and Mathematics.
He revealed that the percentage of candidates that obtained five credits and above including English Language and Mathematics in the WASSCE for school candidates in 2014 and 2015 was 31.28 per cent and 38.68 per cent respectively.
